Lower Hutt Early Learning Centre

Birch St, Lower Hutt

Welcome to Childhood Concepts, Birch St.

We are a close community of teachers and families who know and care for each other. Teachers here stay for many years, giving us a real sense of stability.

We have been here for many years and are proud of our long-established great reputation. It’s those recommendations that keep bringing in new families that make us really proud to know that we are providing a great start to all of our children’s learning lives.

Our Early Learning Centre

What we cherish about our centre is we are one of the very few small centres still around. With just 35 children, we really are a small home from home and have a very special, small family community.

‘Fantails’ are our little under two years old group and ‘Kiwis’ are our proud over two year olds. Small setting, small group sizes-big heart!

Whilst our different age groups and siblings have time to be independent in their rooms, they also have time together in the playground, which gives great balance and a lovely ‘family grouping’ environment.

We are lucky that our playground is large. The focal point is our big sandpit in the middle, which brings us all together.

A Day in the Life

Open from 7.15am to 6pm, year-round, our big ‘Kiwis’ and our little ‘Fantails’ have a great time playing and learning at Birch St.

Inside the centre, our walls sing with displays contributed to by our parents; their aspirations for their children, photos from home and their lives beyond the centre. Artwork, children’s knowledge and learning around the different curriculum areas, is also displayed and shared.

Water play, gardening, climbing, balls, jumping sacks, messy play, art are all a regular feature of our outdoors too, making it a vibrant space of activity. We are lucky that in really bad weather we have a big room in the back of the centre too, to burn energy and keep our bodies moving. And also lucky to have Playball sessions every week to add in variety, sports skills and inspiration to the team and children.

A delicious, homecooked lunch by our centre cook fills the children’s hungry tummies, as well as breakfast and snacks throughout the day.
